LAS VEGAS — The Samsung Gear S2 is Samsung’s best smartwatch by far, so it makes sense the company would want to dress it up a little. At CES, Samsung announced it would soon offer the Gear S2 Classic in two new colors: platinum and — you guessed it — rose gold.
The new versions (don’t call them editions) aren’t just a new coat of paint. The watch casing is finished with premium material, either 18-carat rose gold or pure platinum, Samsung says.
Each watch also comes with a trio of watch faces specifically tailored to match the hues of the finish. Samsung’s also offering a slew of new watchbands for the S2, with an ivory leather band crafted to complement the rose-gold watch. Samsung says it also adjusted the stitching of the leather bands based on customer feedback about the band on the S2 Classic.
The new watches ship with the Gear S2’s expanded app ecosystem, which includes Uber, iHeartRadio and Facebook Messenger. If you want your watch to be truly independent of your phone, Samsung offers 3G connectivity as an option.
No prices or ship dates yet, but they’re certain to command a large premium over the regular Gear S2 Classic, which costs $349.99.
Just don’t call them editions.
