The lock screen on iOS 10 is getting a fresh look. First, your screen will light up when you lift it to your face, meaning no more pressing the side button to see it.</div>

Control Center is an easy way to access your flashlight, camera, calculator and timer. Now, 3D Touch works on those items too. If you have an iPhone 6S or iPhone 6S Plus, hard press on those icons to get more information about what to access.</div>

On the flashlight, you can select your brightness. You can quickly set the timer for an hour, 20 minutes, five minutes or one minute. With the calculator, you can copy the last result. And a 3D Touch gesture on the camera icon opens up the same options as the app icon, including one-tap access to selfie, slo-mo video recording, video recording or simply taking a photo.</div>

Notifications has a whole new look in iOS 10. The bubbles are slightly larger (they kind of look like notifications on the Mac) and are separated. </div>

The Today view is still a swipe to the right —- that's where your widgets live — but now the notifications can do more. </div>

In the past, you could reply (by swiping down to quick-reply) to a text or message from a notification if it arrived immediately, but not if it came in later. Now, a long press on a notification will bring up the quick-reply window, so you can reply without having to open the Messages app.</div>

If you want to clear all your notifications, just 3D Touch the "X" on the right hand corner of Notification Center and press "Clear All Notifications."</div>

If you want to send a message or image with a disappearing effect, you can now add that. Do a long press on the "send" arrow in Messages to select a number of different screen and background effects.</div>

Turn your iPhone to landscape mode in Messages and you can write out a message with your fingertip. Turn it back to portrait to send. This is a great way to send something with your own personal touch.</div>

If you have the predictive keyboard up in iOS 10, emoji will now show up when you type a word that has a related emoji. This feature is actually accessible in <i>any</i> app. And it's awesome.</div>

There was a lot of buzz yesterday when Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, seemingly debunked the popular practice of quitting background apps on your iPhone to conserve battery power. While double-clicking and swiping to close apps is second nature to a lot of iOS users, when you shut down frequently used apps, it actually uses more power. Imagine if you had to shut down your car at every stoplight. Not only would you lose time starting up your car over and over, you would use more fuel, since cars need a little extra gas to get the engine running (yes, I know that’s not quite the case with modern cars; but I’m making a metaphor here). The same goes for iOS – an app needs to restore connections, launch processes, and get everything up and running. That takes more energy than if it was sitting idle in the background.</div>

When you’re not using Wi-Fi, or you’re in an area where you won’t have access to a Wi-Fi network, you can save some juice by turning off Wi-Fi altogether. What if you’re stuck with barely any battery, no access to power, and you just need to make sure you iPhone is ready for one more call to summon your ride or send one last text when you need it. Introduced with iOS 9, Low Power Mode is a god-send for those of us who use our phones all day, only to find it gasping when we get ready to leave for our evening commute home. Low Power disables “Hey Siri,” mail fetch, and a few visual effects to help your iPhone last till you get home. What’s nice about Low Power Mode as opposed to Airplane Mode is that you can still receive calls and messages. When you hit 20% battery life, your iPhone will ask you automatically if you want to switch to Low Power Mode. It’s a win for Google, which is gunning for larger companies as cloud customers. But it might be short-lived, as it looks like Apple is also simultaneously building out its own system to bring data stored on its millions of devices in house.</div>

At minimum Apple would seem to be adding Google to the mix.</div>

CRN pegged Apple’s spending with Google between $400 and $600 million. One source simply said it was a “significant” amount. If the CRN report is accurate and the revenue figure refers to an annual rate, that would be significant for Google! The search giant doesn’t disclose its cloud numbers, but some analysts have pegged its total revenue last year at around $500 million.</div>

For Apple, though, the deal might portend a move to cut costs ahead of creating its own cloud storage system. Google’s cloud team is in deal-making mode, aggressively seeking to bring in new customers to use its cloud services, and may have sweetened the deal — or been more willing than AWS and Azure to concede to Apple’s demands. (And Apple, if anything, is good at aggressive demand-making.)</div>

Then there’s Apple’s next step. Morgan Stanley, in a note last month, laid out the tea leaves: Apple has announced three data centers opening soon, and spent an estimated $1 billion last year on AWS. It’s a logical move for Apple if it wants more independence from its tech rivals. And it’s one Apple should make to store the growing media libraries from its mobile, TV and TBD products.</div>

That's simply technically incorrect. There's no "balance" possible in the debate on encryption. Either we have access to real encryption or we don't. It very much is an issue of absolutes. Real encryption means that the data is absolutely scrambled, the same way that a paper shredder absolutely obliterates documents. If you have a route to defeat encryption on a device or between two devices, it's a backdoor, whether the government wants to play a deceptive word game or not. </div>
